I have been corresponding with my friend Kenichi who lives in Tokyo and has been telling me about life there, which makes me want to visit the place. You are probably aware of the changes that are occurring in Japanese culture especially amongst the young. There is a real liberation of the whole value system and in some instances this goes to some extremes. There are a number of districts in Tokyo where young people like to live, these districts are generally focused around the universities and colleges. In these districts and there are lots of facilities for young people especially night clubs, places to congregate such as coffee shops and bars and some pretty wild places to shop. Most of the kids dress in a highly western fashion often to an extreme. There are heaps of gyms, swimming pools and other places to keep fit and to keep the body slim and in shape. Being in shape is an emerging and important cultural value for the young urban Japanese. The importance of image and creativity also provides a huge demand for hairdressing salons, beauty parlors which specialize in all manner of services, from hair removal, skin rejuvenation and laser treatments all of which are strongly patronized by both sexes.
On the streets in the district centers, at all times of the day, there are always heaps of young people mostly in groups, sometimes with purpose, often just enjoying being there. The scene is electric, there are all types ranging from the conservative and pretty, the skater dude types to the extreme leather boys and punks and more. All in some way conforming to a special stereotype but the diversity is just amazing. The common denominator is the care with each person presents their themselves in their stereotypical image.
Kenichi has been telling me of a reality wild new craze. The movie Spiderman has had an intense impact on the young in Japan, the gear, the mannerisms and the talks are often mimicked. It's not uncommon to see kids in the suits, play acting in the streets and malls. So strong has been the influence that older fans are even seen wearing the Spiderman gear to dance halls and night clubs. Part of this is obviously the fun from acting the part of the movie character but the other is the pleasure the young person gets from the expression of the body in the skin-tight suit. This is one of the reason Ian Thorpe, the 19 year old Australian world record swimmer has become such an idol in Japan. His achievement, his youthful good looks and his extremely sensual appearance in his skin-tight, one-piece black Adidas swimming suit has made him such hot property with both girls and boys.
Around the time of the World Swimming Championships in Fukuoka 2002 there was a further change in the dance party scene which shocked dance house patrons and freaked out some operators. A few adoring fans of Thorpe wore the black swimming suits on the dance floor. This trend started wit a few daring fans buying the suits and experimenting by wearing them under their regular gear, which was removed at some strategic moment during the night. The sleek gyrating bodies on the dance floor in shiny black body suits provided a totally sensual image which was energizing to be part of and exciting to watch.
This seemingly harmless affectation has developed into a sort of underground sexual cult which is horrifying parents and is of concern to authorities. It has possibly emerged from the Japanese Zentai cult, rather than an emphasis on total enclosure the emphasis is on the body form and sexuality. They are generally brightly colored and have bold and large explicit lettered graphics which state in English for example "Play girl", "Sexboy", "Roll me over", which is meant to type casts the wearer as a sort of sexual deviant.
How Kenichi became involved is a fascinating story. He is 27 and is studying Environmental Science at university. After high school he decided he wanted to explore the world before concentrating on study. After a few months traveling he got a job as a tour guide in Northern Thailand and in Australia. That is how I came to know him. After 5 years he decided he wanted to do something a little more tangible for the environmental and conservation, the enrolled at university. After a while the topic of the club where the black skin-tight suits were worn was discussed, some of the others had been and watched those dressed like seals and found it great fun. Each person had to show identity to prove that there were 18 or over to get into the night club. It was pretty busy and most people were in nomad street gear. On the dance floor however there were 5 boys and 2 girls, all around 19 or 20, wearing shiny skin-tight bodysuits, dancing routines with great style and precision. There were others dancing but the ones in the suits took the limelight. Kenichi loved dancing and thought he would love to dance with them, he really wanted to meet some new friends and get into something new. At this stage their outfits were really not a big deal.
When the dancers tool a spell he went across to them, firstly complimented them on their routine and asked them if they were a professional troupe or a club and how come they danced so well together. They were just a group of friends from his university and practiced together and got the idea of the suits from another venue and their admiration of Ian Thorpe. They and asked if he was a dancer and then he explained his situation, particularly his work in Australia they became very interested. They even asked if he would like to join them as they had an odd number and needed another person who could dance. They would teach him the routines. Ke-Ta one of the guys came up to Kenichi introduced himself and explained where and when the group met. The day at the shop was a totally mad experience. Kenichi went early on the Saturday morning straight after swimming training, it was a regular sports shop and was quite busy by the time he arrived. He went to one of the attendants and explained what he wanted and was directed to a counter at the back of the store. Here again he had to show identity to verify his age, which he thought was quite amusing, then was ushered through a locked door into a large brightly lit room. He was welcomed by a guy in the wildest costume he could ever imagine. It was red with black "fire" up one side and in big white letters up the side of the fire "Sexboy" and the same world across the arm and leg of the other side. There was a special way to get into the suit and when undressed the Makato offered to assist. It took almost 15 minutes to put the suit on the final zipping the securing with assistance from Makoto. Ke-Ta then gratefully accepted the suit but was reminded "You must wear underpants for trying it on ". The difference was that they just kept going and going and after some considerable time the limelight started to shift to Yamato and Hiro. In the changing shed, Kenichi and Ke-Ta removed their new swimming suits from the packet, lay them on the bench and removed their clothes. Hiro and Yamato could not help seeing that Kenichi and Ke-Ta were totally hairless. Kenichi explained the whole situation, the explanation also drew quite a crowd of onlookers some even asked for additional details on the procedures. The designer explained how all the alteration and re-cuts were carefully recorded so that final sizing could be readily developed. The difference in the second fitting was remarkable, almost perfection. The objective was to have the suits fit precisely over the body, there were to be no wrinkles or parts of the body that material was not stretched over. However it should not fit too tightly so as to be uncomfortable or to change the shape of any muscle or body shape. The material and in particular the seams should actually move over the skin as the body moves and changes shape. Some seams were meant to be quite tight these were different for male and female. A special flat stitch was used which also allowed the adjustment of the amount of stretch. It was gauging this tension that was particularly difficult, especially in the erogenous area. The models were really keen to get the best results from the suits and were particularly patient and co-operative with the technical team.
All were looking forward to giving the suits a proper demonstration, so after the final fitting and adjustment a small party was to be organized. The main participants were of course the models, all theses who had worked on the project were invited and a number of carefully picked observers were also asked to attend and make comments. The outsiders mainly consisted of people from the night club industry and regular patrons of those establishments where the suits would be worn. A good response was necessary, for the project to be economically viable they needed to sell at least 10000 units, which meant the starting of a craze amongst party goers.
There was about one week between the last fitting and the big night. In the interim the models had their body hair removed and were made to feel really good about themselves and primed for the event. This involved being as fit as possible, having lots of sleep and eating well. Each morning the whole team would meet for a swimming work-out and the boys would go and do another hour in the gym. The girls did stretching and lighter strengthening work-outs. In all instance they were provided with the most revealing costumes, which made them feel really hot. There was heaps of dancing practice too so that by the night routines came automatically. They were also asked, the boys in particular, to limit their sexual activity just prior to the party so as to increase their libido and need for release.
On the party night all the other guests just milled around eating and drinking whilst the models got into their suits in another room. The suits had actually been remade completely. The material simply can not be cut using ordinary scissors nor can it be sewn like conventional cloth, lycra or neoprene. The suit has no zip or there fasteners. As both surfaces are extremely smooth and shiny there is a tendency for surfaces stick together similar to the way PVC film clings. A lubricant must therefore be carefully applied especially if the garment is washed or gets wet and is allowed to dry without treatment. The lubricant can be either a powder or liquid. To put the suit on the neck is simply stretched apart legs are pulled on first and then the arms are inserted. In the case of the body are suit being dry the entry process is much easier so long as the suit and the body are covered with powder the suit will easily slide over the skin. However if either the skin or the suit is wet or if the suit is tending to stick to itself a liquid silicon lubricant must be used. The attendant adding that when the liquid lubricant is used and the skin is smooth, the suit will tend to get sucked onto the skin which will exaggerate every detail of the body, For example the nipples will be clearly visible, as well as any piercing rings or jewelry and the genitalia will be clearly and explicitly defined. Despite the tendency to suck the shiny material will still slide over the skin.
