To this special 2015 All-Hallows edition of the plaza
There are times when you shouldn't venture into the dark woods, you were warned from the time you were a small child to avoid the Dark Woods at night & at certain times of the year.
Samhain or All-Hallows Eve was meant to be when the evil lurked at its highest inside the dark foreboding boughs of the trees, no natural sound came out of the forest, no birds sang there, no animals set foot inside..
But still you found yourself drawn into the forest, unheeding the warnings, ever onwards your weary feet carried you, as if you were being drawn into the woods by some unearthly power...
It's eerily quiet, you can cut through the air with a knife as it feels so thick and clawing, a mist covers the floor making harder to stay on the path, "Always stay on the path... never venture off them " wise heads advised when venturing into the Dark Woods.
You wander on as you feel the trees seem to be watching you as you pass by, they know something that has been hidden for many centuries, locked away in their ancient bark, guarding the secrets of the forest.
You see a light through a clearing, you think it a trick of the eyes, who would venture this far into the forest on this of all nights, but as you get closer you see some flames flickering, the orange glow reflecting off of the trees inside the clearing, an erie green glow appears to be in the center, there stands a large iron pot on top of the flames, but then some figures appear...
You think to yourself why did I venture out on All-Hallows Eve, every snap of a twig, every wisp of the wind thru the branches, the very air that you breathe, all combines to the feeling of unease. You feel drawn into the clearing, some power is compelling your legs to walk into the opening...
As you get closer the three dark figures are huddled over the cauldron, you sense evil lurking by and your skin tingles like it's on fire, everything about this is telling you to turn and run, but still you're drawn towards the three women lurking over the boiling pot...
Closer still your taken to the center, the pot now hissing and spitting, the green glow emanating from the cauldron begins to lighten up the faces of the three hags, dressed in black robes, their gnarly fingers clutching at a wooden spoon stirring, constantly stirring the contents of the pot.
You now see the reason why you had the warnings as you see the faces of the three haggard looking women, it's your wife, her sister and the mother-in-law, you hear them speak...
Round about the caldron go;
In the poison'd entrails throw.
Toad, that under cold stone,
Days and nights has thirty-one;
Swelter'd venom sleeping got,
Boil thou first i' the charmed pot!
Fillet of a fenny snake,
In the caldron boil and bake;
Eye of newt, and toe of frog,
Wool of bat, and tongue of dog,
Adder's fork, and blind-worm's sting,
Lizard's leg, and owlet's wing,—
For a charm of powerful trouble,
Like a hell-broth boil and bubble.
Scale of dragon; tooth of wolf;
Witches' mummy; maw and gulf
Of the ravin'd salt-sea shark;
Root of hemlock digg'd i the dark;
Liver of blaspheming Jew;
Gall of goat, and slips of yew
Sliver'd in the moon's eclipse;
Nose of Turk, and Tartar's lips;
Finger of birth-strangled babe
Ditch-deliver'd by a drab,—
Make the gruel thick and slab:
Add thereto a tiger's chaudron,
For the ingrediants of our caldron.
Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn, and caldron bubble.
Cool it with a baboon's blood,
Then the charm is firm and good. (Macbeth by W Shakespeare)
